Capricorn Caves

LOCATION : Capricorn Caves are located 20m north of Rockhampton, 3km east of The Caves township.

 

OVERVIEW : They were discovered by John Olsen in 1882, opened to public in 1884, and lit with electricity in 1926. Wheelchair access was created in 1992. Capricorn Caves was the 1995 winner of the Queensland Tourism Awards for significant local tourist attractions. The caves lie within a limestone hill (tower karst), surrounded by dry rain forest. All caves are inter-linking. The caves are famed for their its natural rock formations and its large Cathedral Cavern (and amazing acoustics) - which is also used for weddings and annual Christmas Carols.
ACCOMMODATION : On-site: Visitor's Centre (kiosk & souvenirs), undercover dining area, bar, swimming pool, gardens, picnic & BBQ areas, self contained cabins, and caravan park. Hotels, motels, caravan parks, and camping available in Rockhampton.
CAVE TOURS : Cathedral Cave Tour shows eleven caverns (60 min.). Open daily (except Christmas Day). Regular Tours run from 9am - 4pm.
SPECIALIST TOURS : Deep Vault Tour (90 min.) - extends Cathedral Tour to four extra highly decorated caverns. Mini Adventure Tour (90 min.) - tours includes un-lit sections of the Cave Tower (BYO torch). Adventure Tour (180 min) - full tour of un-lit sections (lights & helmets provided). Specialist tours generally require pre-booking.
