OVERVIEW
: Two caves open to the public -The Glowworm Cave & Aranui Cave. The
caves were first opened for tourists in 1887. The world famous Glowworm
Cave offers a boat ride on under ground river through Glowworm Grotto to
view thousands of glowworms. Aranui Cave is packed with magnificent formations. |
LOCATION
: Waitomo Caves are located 2.5 hours south of Auckland by road, 90
minutes south- west of Rotorua, and 60 minutes south of Hamilton - off State
Highway #1 - 8km south of Otorohanga. |

ACCOMMODATION
: At
Glowworm Cave: Visitors Centre (ticket & souvenirs). In Waitomo Caves Village:
Museum of Caves (highly recommended attraction), the historic Waitomo Caves
Hotel, general store, hotel, restaurants, camping ground, sporting facilities,
bush walking, abseiling, and horse trekking. Nearby attractions: Obaki Maori
Village, Otorohanga Kiwi House. |
CAVE TOURS
: Open daily (except Christmas Day). Glowworm Cave (45 minute tour)
runs very frequently, 9am - 4pm. No photography permitted (it disturbs the
glowworms). Visitors should try to avoid middle of the day when large numbers
of tour buses arrive. Aranui Cave (45 minute tour - maximum party 20) -
tours run regularly, 9am-4pm. Photography permitted. |
