Margaret River Region Caves
OVERVIEW : They were first discovered in 1895, and the caves have been opened for inspection since 1904. Four show caves open for inspection. Jewel Cave (60 min guided tour) is 8km north of Augusta. It features large, heavily decorated chambers & longest straw stalactite in an Australian tourist cave. Lake Cave (60 min guided tour) is found 16km south of Margaret River. It features 62m descent to lake inside cave, with great reflections. Mammoth Cave (60 min self-guided audio tour) is located 13 km south of Margaret River and is over 570m long, with large chambers. It is particularly noted for its fossils. Ngilgi Cave (60 min semi-guided tour) is located 9 km from Dunsborough, and has an abundance of beautiful shawls. LOCATION : The Margaret River Region Caves are located near the towns of Margaret River, Dunsborough and Augusta, between 260 km and 315km south of Perth. |
FACILITIES On Site:
LAKE CAVE has an Interpretive Centre that explores cave geology, biology, local history and megafauna, as well as info on caves of the world.
Jewel Cave also has an interpretative area focusing on the local history, including the thylacine fossil discoveries in the cave, and threatened stygofauna of the cave system. Lake Cave has an onsite tearoom, while light refreshments are available at Ngilgi and Jewel Caves. |
