Copyright on the papers comprising these proceedings is the property of individual authors, Apart from fair dealing for the purpose of private study, research, criticism or review as permitted under the Copyright Act, no part may be reproduced by any process without permission.

The delay in publication of these proceedings is regretted. It is unfortunate that at about the time of the conference, the Buchan Caves Advisory Committee was disbanded, and so the arrangements for editing and publishing collapsed. We are now extremely grateful the Bairnsdale Region of the Department of Conservation and Environment for making this publication possible.

We also must note that this volume is a continuation of the series previously known as Cave Management in Australia. It has been re-named in light of the strong interest and involvement of New Zealanders, and marks a turning point in the history of cave management in our region.
