Anne Atkinson graduated in Geology from Sydney University, and after marrying grazier Vernon Atkinson became a partner in the development of a new pastoral enterprise near Undara. In 1972 a short paper on the Undara Volcano was presented to an international conference, convened by the National Speleological Society of the USA at the request of NASA. This formed part of a major project to document the world's lava tubes. Colleagues from James Cook University formed part of the team and with Anne produced a series of papers on the McBride Volcanics and the Undara tubes. An army of volunteers collected survey data and produced the maps and long profile requested by NASA - a comprehensive documentation of the Undara Volcano and its associated tubes. Anne then carried out her MSc research on the basalts of the Atherton deep lead - a very complicated task. The work of Vernon and Anne Atkinson at Undara was recognised by the Explorers Club of New York in 1991. Vernon was elected a Member and Anne the first woman Fellow. She subsequently acted as a Consultant on the Undara lava tubes for the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service, and was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for her achievements in speleology and geology. She continues to be active in the conservation of these unique features of Australia's heritage.
